Dimmensions- Several years ago a client with Parkinson’s disease smiled at David Ogden, PT and said, “Challenge me.” The end result was the Unpredictable Command Technique. It is a technique that, with switching back and forth performance of familiar and unfamiliar movements, challenges both the mind and the body. This stimulates and facilitates regaining motor skills and somatic awareness as well as “sharpening” the focus of the mind for better and safer functional performance. It can be applied during one-on-one sessions or in a class setting, on land and in the pool. Using the Unpredictable Command Technique, the author and others have observed client(s) demonstrating improved voluntary control, awareness of movement and body in space, and enhanced mental concentration. David had pool and land-based clients who wanted to do homework! He created 16 UCT sessions, which he called Dimensions in Movement (sessions 1 – 16) that clients could listen to and follow in their homes. Many activities and movements in these sessions emphasize trunk control. Without trunk control, extremity movements can be (and usually are) significantly compromised, or even impossible to do. With appropriate trunk control, deficiencies in the legs and arms are better addressed. Activities done with the arms and legs can also re-enforce trunk control, strength and endurance.
